Cup8 — 3D Waves
The section of the Cup8 fishing app that turns the marine forecast into a 3D scene to explore with your fingers.
Cup8 is a fishing app for people who live by the sea: marine weather, spots, catches, tournaments and a library of techniques, alongside the cup8.it website. Here we present one of its sections, 3D Waves, which turns the marine forecast for your spot into a three-dimensional scene you explore with your fingers. There are four views. Sea shows the waves at real scale, with a graduated pole planted in the seabed and a flag on top that flies according to wind strength and direction. Relief turns the Mediterranean into a layered map. Week lines up seven crests, one per day. Nostradamus shows how worthwhile it is to go fishing, day by day. The video above records the real app with that day's data.

From day to night, on the same pole
The graduated pole planted in the seabed shows how far the water rises and falls; on top, the flag hangs or flies with that hour’s wind. Press play and the hours roll by, with sky, reflections and moon changing along.

The Mediterranean in layers
Waves, sea temperature, plankton and seabed become stacked coloured sheets, in the same colours as the map legend. Waves and temperature rise, the seabed sinks into a hollow. One finger rotates, two zoom, three pan.
Seven days at a glance
In Week each day is a crest and a blade of light cuts them all at the same hour. In Nostradamus the days become coloured stacks, as tall as the day is worth going out, for spearfishing, rod or boat fishing.
The reason behind every score
One tap on a day opens its card: the scores of the three kinds of fishing, the best hour and the factors that raise or lower the score, from wind to moon, down to the fish in season.

Next to the app sits the website: marine weather for more than twenty Italian ports, the Nostradamus page, a glossary of Mediterranean fish and articles, illustrated like cut paper in sea blue and orange.

Illustrated headers, short cards, search at the top of the glossary: the pages are designed for the phone first, with the same information as the app, one shareable link away.
Design choices, step by step
Real scale
The waves are computed so that the height you see is the forecast height: long swell with its own period and wind sea on top, with ripples that never repeat.
Light
Sky, reflections and water colour change with the chosen hour, from full daylight to a moonlit night.
Layered maps
Every Relief layer uses the same colours as the legend of the app's map, so moving from flat to 3D needs nothing new to learn. Switching layer keeps the camera where it was.
Performance
The section only loads when opened, and on less powerful phones it lightens the scene by itself. If 3D is not supported it says so, without blocking the rest of the app.
